The Beauty in the Selfie.
There seems to be such a growing trend with people taking selfies. Everywhere you look you will find someone has posted one on social media. And selfie taking does not discriminate, men, women, boys and girls alike, everybody has found this to be the thing to do. But there is not only a lesson in the selfie, there is the beauty in the selfie.
A selfie for a teenage girl is now more normal than taking a group photo or family photo. Don’t believe me, just check any of their social media profiles or pictures and you will see all kinds of selfies. Bathroom selfies, car selfies, classroom selfies and last but not least the group selfies. Smiles, frowns, pouty, silly, you name it and you will find it. But taking a selfie is actually a good thing. Now let me be clear I am not talking about the ones where our kids are underdressed and in the mirror giving us more than we care to see. (That is another story). I am referring to the selfies that allow a young girl to see who she is and see her true beauty. Believe it or not, all girls don’t always see themselves as others see them. Yes she expects her family to tell her she is pretty, but what about what she tells herself? Sometimes it is not until that moment when she is staring at a picture of herself that she can really see it.
For instance, think of the girl who never takes pictures at all. Why? Because she does not think she is pretty enough. Or when she looks at herself, it is not flawless, but filled with what she sees is wrong in the picture. But wait, all of a sudden there is that one selfie. Then another. Finally it is a moment when she is able to see what has been there the entire time. A beauty cannot be matched. Outer and inner. And in that moment she becomes comfortable with what has been a challenge all along. Seeing the Beauty in Self.
Personal note: I was that girl described above until I had that moment. So now help me help another girl. Post your best selfie, tag it and join the movement!
